Drift was bought at the fall horse sale right here in North Dakota in October 2018 in foal for 2019. I usually never buy from sales because I know nothing about their past and what kind of mare they are. But I LOVE her bloodlines and she had such a nice quiet eye coming into the ring I couldn't let her go to someone else. She came from a huge ranch so I knew she was just a range mare but they did lead her in so I at least knew she was halter broke.
After purchasing her, Dylan and I went out back to look her over. She was so scared but I could see in her eyes that she wanted to trust. She let me walk up to her and put a halter on her and she took a deep breath of relaxation. She loaded excellent and when we got home she was so calm for being in a new place in pitch black. The next morning in daylight we went out there to mess with her a little more, we had to corner her to let us touch her but after that she was great again. We pet her everyday throughout the winter and she got use to us.
In the spring she had her beautiful red dun stud colt, who unfortunately had a very rare birth defect/clotting disorder and had to be put down at 2 weeks old. We did a bunch of tests and everything is normal with mom, this was just a freak thing. He had a very special place in my heart just like his momma. A few days later a gal down in South Dakota lost a mare and had an orphan foal so we decided to see if Drift would take him. It turned out great and she took him under her wing. Only really special mares do this in my books. She was meant to be with us that's for sure!
Fall of 2019 she came back home to us after her orphan foal was weaned. She was just a range mare down in South Dakota with no contact so I was nervous about getting her back and having to start all over calming her down again. With great surprise and relief she remembered us as soon as we walked in to get her. Ever since then all she wants is attention, still can't make any fast sudden movements close to her but she is learning and loves her new home.
